10 Valium tablets (chlordiazepoxide) in the palm of a hand. This is a high dose (100mg) which would incapacitate most people.

If you are prescribed sleep medication then it might belong to a category called Z-drugs. These include medication which work as benzodiazepine drugs and mime GAMA, a neurotransmitter which induces sleep.

Tablets such as Zopiclone  usually come after benzodiazepines and they are preferred by most people since they do not have any severe side effects. Benzodiazepines are still used to treat anxiety and insomnia but Zopiclone is known specifically to induce sleep. The classification includes drugs which are known as non- benzodiazepines however this term can be misleading. The reason why they fall under Z-drugs is because most of them start with a Z or have the letter in their spelling. Some of these include:

Eszopiclone – This medication is sold under a different name, Lunesta which is made by Sepracor and it might not be as effective as others in the market, but it has a number of unique benefits. It also works well in the long-run and the only side-effects reported include slight dizziness and loss of co-ordination.

Zaleplon – Zaleplon is popular with those who suffer from insomnia and is made under the brand name Sonata. Even though it is basically a benzodiazepine it causes more or less the same side-effects which include some memory loss, drowsiness, agitation amongst others.

Zolpidem – This medication is manufactured under a number of different names and the most familiar out of them is Ambien. Zolpidem is used predominately for short-term insomnia as well as restless leg syndrome. If it is taken for more than the prescribed amount of time, the medication can become addictive leading to hallucinations, amnesia, reduced motor co-ordination, and impaired judgement to name a few.

Zopiclone – This is a short-acting and hypnotic drug which is sold under the name Eszopiclone, but it is also sold under a number of different brand names across the globe. The most common side effects of this medication include headaches, dry mouth and a metallic taste, however none of them impair the senses as such.

Z-drugs vs. Benzodiazepines

Both benzodiazepines and the non benzodiazepines variety of drugs work on the brain and specifically on the GABA-A receptors which induce sleep. Even though these do not compete with GABA for sites in the neurons, but they bind to other places and have the same effect on the receptors. Z-drugs are more selective when it comes to inducting, sleep but do not work as anti-anxiety cures.

If you are not used to taking either of these medications, then the first doses should be enough to ease most of the symptoms you are feeling. A benzodiazepine cannot remove the underlying cause of anxiety, but it will allow you to cope with the situations you are going through- with a clear mind. Both types of medication work best in situations in which you are unable to fall asleep, or your sleep is expected to last for a short while.

This medication might not be as effective if you have an ongoing personality disorder, or have difficulty sleeping. However, a short course might just be enough to alleviate most of your symptoms and allow you to regain a semblance of normalcy. You can stop taking either of these medications without facing any problems if you take it for a limited time period (2 to 4 weeks at most). Otherwise you may develop medical issues which can last if you become addicted to such medication. This is why most doctors prescribe Zopiclone UK for as brief a time period as possible.

If you take sleeping tablets for longer than prescribed, not only can the effects wear off but your body might get so used to them so that it becomes immune. In other words, you might not be able to fall asleep even if you take multiple tablets at a time which can prove dangerous.

Withdrawal symptoms will be imminent if you stop taking the tablets suddenly. Your body might go into shock and you will start craving the tablets because you think you might will feel normal when you take them. Therefore, Sleeping tablets should be taken only if a doctor advises it since this way you will be able to keep within your limits.
